We meet Tuesday afternoons from
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the
enough ladies can't come, our
get-togethers are cancelled.
We hope the following information will help you to know
about our little group, what we do and what we've done so far:
Our group started on May 5, 1996 in the former St. Martha's
church hall to provide lap quilts for shut-ins. Since then, we have made over 2,340
quilts.
In addition to giving lap quilts to shut-ins, for years we have
donated quilts to veterans. A volunteer is kind enough to deliver them. This year
we gave him 15 quilts. We try to make them out of red, white and blue material.
Also, this year, working through the Ministry of Care, we gave
14 quilts out at Concordia. Over the years we have given lap quilts to the residents
of the Bishop Morrow Home, Pine View Personal Care Home, Pleasant Hill Personal
Care Home and a personal care home in Gilpin.
We also give quilts to infants baptized in the parish. Besides
giving baby quilts to the little ones when they are baptized, through the years
we've given quilts and a small donation to local families including those with
children diagnosed with cancer. These included a boy featured in the “Catholic Accent,”
a girl from Leechburg and a girl from St. Joseph’s Parish in New Kensington. We
also gave 10 quilts to a woman who distributes them to families who need baby items.
For many years we've made items to be used as prizes for
the games at our church festival. We've made stuffed animals, pillows, pillows
and more pillows. Some pillows were game balls, some flip-flops and this year they
were "lady bugs." We're told they are the first prizes to go - the
kids really like them. It's been suggested that we start now on items for next
year so there will be many more items than the number we've been giving them.
Kathleen Baker is our talented imaginative member who has created most of the items.
She does a great job. Every year we donate a quilt to the "Chinese Auction"
at the parish festival. The pictures are drawn by Ann Mac. We call her our "resident
artist." She also does a great job.
The success of our ministry relies on donations. A lot of folks
have donated material to us - mostly prints. We thank them very much! We do need
plain colored material too. Some quilts are also sold. So, when we sell a baby quilt,
the money is used to buy plain-colored material and batting. As with everything
else, the cost of the batting and the material has risen sharply. We've been
accepting $15.00 for a baby quilt but, if we are to continue, we need to raise our
price - which we are reluctant to do, or sell more quilts. If you need a baby gift,
please consider getting one of our quilts. They do make a nice gift. Come see them
some Tuesday afternoon at the Gilpin site. If you can't come, contact Ruth through
the office. She has the baby quilts in the trunk of her car. Your purchases are
always appreciated.
We would also appreciate your help in delivering lap quilts and
for any donations you might care to give.
If you want to aid us in making our projects, we would very much
like to have you. New members are always welcome.
